Brief Background

Name of the game has been derived from the Badminton House which was the seat of the Duke of Beaufort where the family and friends of the duke got involved in the game in the 19th century. However, the common consensus is that the game developed from the children game named battledore and shuttlecock.


Gaming Pattern

Players on the court will have the objective of putting the shuttle over the net in the center of the court to the opponent’s side and if it does not come back while in the air, a point is won.

Court is divided into several parts. A part from the net towards the court is the area where if the shuttle falls during service, it will be fault.
There is also a rectangular base area at the end of the court and if served shuttle lands there it would be fault.
Remaining part of the court is divided into two parts, a left and right court.

Some of the basic features of the game are that only the serving player or side can score a point. Usually the games are of 11, 15, or 21 points. Match is usually of best of three games and players switch sides after each game during the first two and halfway during the third.
