Roles and responsibilities of a funeral director include arranging funeral services and burials. Unlike what is perceived funeral homes are not owned by shrines or government but owned by funeral directors. Some funeral homes are owned by shrines and other local bodies, but most aren’t.

For the layman, a funeral director is often known as a mortician or even as an undertaker in some parts of the world.

The duty of a funeral director starts when someone notifies him of a death. Now, the funeral director arranges for the body to be carried till the funeral home. At times, he also helps relatives of the deceased with death certificates and obituary as well. In other words, they coordinate with the family members and relatives of the deceased to cover the entire funeral process. It can be as simple as choosing the casket for burial or other laborious burial aspects.

Funeral directors work closely with clergies, as these clergies are required for religious customs and rituals before and during the burial. Cemetery officials often work with funeral directors for the processes related to the funeral.

Requirements and Trainings

A funeral director in any part of the world needs to know customs and rituals related to the burial with respect to religion. A funeral director needs to be mentally tough to handle the entire exercise, as relatives of the deceased are mostly on the vulnerable side during this unfortunate event. Like other funeral based jobs, this is an all male job.

Education Based Aspects

Diploma courses after high schools are available to become a funeral director. In many places, only experience and knowledge is sufficient. After from diplomas and certification courses, enthusiasts can work in a funeral to gain experience.

There are some institutions which provide courses and training in mortuary related subjects and other funeral aspects. With handful of institutions, college rankings are often dependent on the level of training opportunities provided by the respective campuses.

Lastly, the job of a funeral director is often an indirect way of social work, still the median salary per year touches the 50,000 $ mark.


As there aren’t many colleges, which offer study in funeral services, so college rankings don’t matter, but factors like practical training, course material and an overall review (institution) matter a lot. Look for career portals and catalogues which include offbeat fields like funeral director, stagehand etc.
