Elayn Hunt Correctional Center

General Information

Elayn Hunt Correctional Center is situated in St. Gabriel, Los Angeles. This is a special educational establishment which caters for the needs of prisoners. It is a maximum security facility, since it houses various types of offenders. It works in conjunction with the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

Objective

The main objective of this correctional center is to try to promote an environment where the prisoners feel that they have plenty of things to learn, in order to become better citizens, and more employable once they are released. The rehabilitation process has proven to be rather successful, as it centers around the positive approach, and includes various areas. Offenders are primarily treated medically and psychologically, and then social, academic and work related skills are seen to.

Work and Education Programmes

As discussed above the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center incorporates the use of work and education programmes which are intended to make the residents better people during their rehabilitation process. Some of the schemes and programmes that are used at the center include the following:
Basic literacy course
Basic mathematical skills course
Basic reading skills course
Course leading to a High School Diploma
Vocational education program
The Job Skills Educational program
Computer skills program
Programs in collaboration with the Louisiana Technical College

It is worthwhile noting that the offenders are allowed to choose what they feel they are best at, or what they are mostly interested in. Obviously each person has his own abilities and skills, and these need to be taken into consideration. Technically speaking, several offenders are interested in courses which are offered in collaboration with the Louisiana Technical College, since they include a more hands-on type of tuition. Some of the courses which are included in this scheme include welding, carpentry, air-conditioning and refrigeration and automotive technology. Such educational programs and courses help to make the offender utilise his time at the center more efficiently, while also preparing himself to become much more employable and skilled once he leaves the center.
Besides the educational facet, the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center also provides work opportunities to its residents. These jobs help to make an offender feel more valuable, while utilizing his time at the center more purposefully and usefully. He also learns a work ethic and work related skills.



The Elayn Hunt Correctional Center works to reinstate a positive attitude with regards to work and education in the residents, in collaboration with the public safety entity. This special school can be found in a Secondary School Directory, however its goals are more encompassing than those of a normal school.
