Finding information about notable figures, incidents, events, etc. in the history of American State Universities is not always an easy task. Take the Scopes Trial for instance, not many parents or students might be aware of it unless they had access to the right volume Cambridge Encyclopedia.

The Scopes Trial which took place in 1925 and popularly got to be known as The State of Tennessee v. Scopes. The case was about a biology teacher in Dayton, Tennessee, by the name of John Thomas Scopes, who was charged and arrested as he has violated an act of the state legislature since he had taught about evolution in his class. During that period teaching about evolution was in fact unlawful and the case was therefore valid.

On 11th July, 1925, the trial officially began with over hundred journalists present on the premises and it is particularly notable that this was also the first trial to be broadcasted live all over America. The trial therefore not only became a part of the history of universities in the US but a part of American history as well and eventually got the name of the ‘Monkey Trial’.

It was also proven in front of judge and jury that John Scopes had indeed been teaching about evolution during his biology class, when three students from the same class testified against him. The trial lasted for 11 days and what particularly highlighted it was the fact that the judge prohibited scientists from testifying and speaking about evolution. In spite of efforts from Scopes’s lawyer, Clarence Darrow, who was the most popular criminal lawyer then, John Thomas Stopes was charged found guilty by the jury and was charged with a fine of $100.
