If you’re a student in the first year, your law school agenda was probably already laid out for you, so you don’t have to worry about choosing anything. Courses like the Constitutional & Criminal Law, Contracts, Torts, Property, or Civil Procedure will be the setting stone for your law school career.

However, if you are nearing the end of the second semester of Law School you will have the great opportunity to choose the next courses.

Select courses that you’re interested in

If the courses you choose are interesting and engage you, then it’s safe to assume they will prepare you for the bar exam and a flourishing legal career. Also, you may not have the chance to study certain subjects again, so this is the moment to choose if you’ve always wanted to study subjects like white collar, organized crime or the impact of the exclusionary rule.

If you have an underlying interest in constitutional law, even if you don’t think you’ll make a career out of it, give the relevant course a try. Or take criminal law, if you actually enjoy this side of the judicial system.

Don’t think about the Bar Exam

Do not think about the Bar Exam at this point. You will take it and most certainly pass if you enjoy what you learn. The classes you take in school will have no effect on this. The things you study in Criminal Law is not the same as the theory you'll have to study for the Bar Exam anyway. You will learn all information you need for the Bar Exam from the specialized bar exam materials or even from online resource like the Cambridge Encyclopedia volumes. So, do not take certain courses just because they are on the bar exam. The important "bar courses" are included in your first-year requirements anyway.

A lot of people are unhappy at law school either because take it more seriously than they need to. Trust yourself and try to enjoy the teachers and courses during the three years and try to do something else besides go to class and study. This way you will learn a lot more, and by the time you reach the bar exam you will be ready.
