His real career started in 1894 with "The First Communion" in 1896 and followed by symbolist influences in paintings from 1897 onwards. Blue period started with the Femme aux bras Crolses in 1902 and La Vie in 1903 that is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The period continued till 1904 and prostitutes and beggars made frequent appearance in his paintings and the highlights were "The Frugal Repast" of 1904 depicting a blind man and also a sighted man. Rose period commenced in 1904 and continued up to 1906 when a more cheery style was adopted with predominance of orange and pink colors in the paintings.



African influence dominated his works during 1907-09 and so did cubism during 1909-12. Thereafter it was all about classicism and surrealisms.
