When we make a deposit in a bank or withdraw money from our account, the person at the bank who helps us with the required procedures is the bank teller. Apart from receiving deposited money and distributing money to customers from their accounts, they may also perform various other tasks like exchanging foreign currency, receiving loan payments, cashing payroll checks and issuing traveler’s checks. We find tellers in all banks in cities as well as rural areas and also in financial institutions.

Whatever transactions are performed by the teller, it is their responsibility to record them in the relevant books of the bank. Where banks have computers for maintaining such records, it is the teller’s job to make necessary entries on the computer. After the banking hours are over, they are required to fill a settlement sheet every day, depicting the deposits and withdrawals and other transactions of the day. This is very important to tally the cash balance left with the teller as well as check for any inaccuracies in any transaction during the day.

Tellers may also perform specialized tasks like keeping records of cash and checks in the bank vault or taking loan payments for real estate. All of this requires accuracy and not even the smallest detail can be ignored.

Though the job of a bank teller sounds somewhat clerical, you will require more than just a high school certificate for this job. Knowledge of computers, business math and usage of other business machines is also important. Some banks also offer training for new recruits.
