A public research institute, University of New Mexico or UNM is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in United States and is the flagship institute for research in the Mexico University system. It is also the largest post secondary institution in entire country.

Brief Background

Founded in 1889, the institute offers different types of degrees including masters, bachelors, under graduate, doctoral, and professional degrees for the enrolled students. Despite the fact that the institute was founded in 1889, the improvement started only in 1980s. Dramatic expansion of medical center took place along with facilities for both business as well as engineering schools. In addition, construction of the Centennial Library took place during this time. In the 1990s Honor’s College was founded besides construction of current bookstore as well as the Dane Smith Hall. Further expansions took place during the first decade of 21st century with construction of George Pearl Hall, and also the creation of branch campus at Rio Rancho.

University of New Mexico is the largest in the State in terms of total enrollment besides being the largest employer.

Campus Features

Covering an area of around 600 acres in the main campus, the institute also has several branch campuses at Gallup, Rio Rancho, Los Alamos, Taos, as well as in Valencia County. Three parts of the campus are central, south, and north. North campus includes the medical, law schools as well as the New Mexico Hospital. Campus also has 8 university buildings. It also includes-

The first building of the campus; the Hodgin Hall;
Arboretum that contains 320 different species of woody plants.
Eight buildings in the campus are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Museums

Central campus of the institute contains four museums –

Maxwell Museum of Anthropology;
Geology and Meteorite Museum;
Southwest Biology Museum, and
University Art Museum.
Greenhouse Movement

One of the most notable features of the institute is the promotion of greenhouse concept in order to enhance sustainability and also to minimize the environmental impact in the campus. That is why UNM has been constantly reducing the energy consumption in the campus using the methods of monitoring, cooling, and heating of the campus.

With these efforts the university achieved grade B for sustainability and is constantly improving as well in greenhouse concept.
